Water Supply Reliability

Santa Clarita families, schools and businesses depend on a reliable water supply every day. Providing that water takes more than reacting to droughts or emergencies. It requires long-term planning, strong infrastructure and a balanced mix of water sources.

Santa Clarita’s water supply includes local groundwater, imported State Water Project water, recycled water, stored water and conservation. Using several sources helps protect the community from becoming too dependent on any one supply.

For Ken Petersen, maintaining this balance is one of the most important responsibilities of serving on the SCV Water Agency Board.

Protecting Our Local Water

Local groundwater is an important part of Santa Clarita’s water supply. Maintaining wells, protecting the groundwater basin and treating contamination help keep this local resource available.

Ken has supported major projects to treat and restore wells affected by PFAS and other contaminants. He also supported planning for the Pinetree Groundwater Recharge Project, which is studying ways to place water back into the groundwater basin for future use.

These projects help protect water quality while strengthening the community’s local water supply.

Preparing for Drought and Emergencies

Santa Clarita also receives imported water through the State Water Project and Castaic Lake. Because imported water supplies can change during droughts, the community needs storage, water banking, transfer agreements and emergency reserves.

Ken has supported agreements that allow SCV Water to better manage available water between wet and dry years. This helps the agency save water when it is available and improve access during times of shortage.
